GLOBAL ECONOMIC RECCESSION HITS TURKEY'S BORON INDUSTRY

Demand for boron and boron products in the world saw significant drop in 2009 amid fallout from the global economic crisis as exports of the element from Turkey also decreased. Global consumption of boron fell 26.3 percent in 2009 from a year earlier down to 2.9 million tonnes and world's boron production dropped by 19 percent to 3.29 million tonnes. Shrinkage in global demand and consumption had a knock-on effect on Turkey's boron industry as the country's boron sales fell by 26 percent to 1.1 million tonnes in 2009 over the previous year. Turkey's state-run mining corporation ETI received a revenue of $451 million from boron sales in 2009. Turkey, Russia and the United States are the largest producers of boron. Turkey has almost 72 percent of the world's boron reserves. CUMHURİYET
