Serbs displayed a magnificient performance against a thriving Turkey throughout the game and Turkey was not able to take the lead until the very last moments.

Ersan ILYASOVA (NBA) was far behind his expected performance. This was however balanced by a magnificient Kerem TUNCERI, Ender ARSLAN, Hidayet TÜRKOĞLU (NBA) and Semih ERDEM.

TEODOSIC a wonderful playmaker contributed so much to the Serbian team, but could not change the result in favor of the Serbs.

We congragulate the Serbian team as well fort he beautiful basketball they played tonight.

The 2010 FIBA Basketball World Championship, the biggest basketball event of the world was given a start in Istanbul, on 28th August 2010. The grand opening also honoured by the presence of CIRQUE DU SOLEIL has been an event to remember. The event, which will took place in the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul’s Ataköy district on Aug. 27, was spectacular, given that a large budget was not allocated to the opening ceremonies hosted in Toronto, Indianapolis and Japan. Past World Basketball Championship opening ceremonies were kept simple, said Turgay Demirel, head of the Turkish Basketball Federation.

The ceremony commenced at 9:30 p.m. and was broadcasted live in HD to 172 countries via 18 cameras. “Our responsibilities are to carry out this event well and become the champion by winning the tournament,” said Demirel, recalling that Turkey came in sixth place and ninth place in previous world basketball championships.

The 16th World Basketball Championship, which brings the tournament back to Europe after a 12-year absence, will host 24 “dream teams” from Aug. 28 to Sept. 12 and will be played in four different cities: Izmir, Istanbul, Ankara and Kayseri, said Ali Özsoy, the general secretary of the Turkish Basketball Federation.

“Actually the championship was to be played in five cities [including Antalya], instead of four,” Demirel told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review. “As 24 teams are participating in the tournament, we needed four cities for six teams each, and the final was to be played in the fifth city. But, we changed it to four cities and five sports halls after seeing that the construction of the sport complex in Antalya ran the risk of not being totally completed in time [for the championship]. Both group matches and the final will be played in Istanbul,” said Demirel.

Noting that 76 percent of tickets have already been sold, Özsoy said that tickets in Istanbul and Ankara have sold out, but sales continue in İzmir and Ankara. “We’re expecting 5 million euros from ticket sales,” said Özsoy, pointing out that the earnings gained from sponsorships will be around 12 million to 13 million euros.

“So far, 150 countries have checked in, which is a record attendance,” said Özsoy. He indicated that in previous championships people from only 105 countries had attended. “Thanks to a large international conference that will be held in Istanbul between Sept. 4 and Sept. 6, the size of the international audience increased,” said Özsoy. He anticipates that 15 percent of the spectators will be foreign.

ABOUT TEAMS

The United States will rely on youth as they attempt to claim back the world crown without many of its National Basketball Association stars, when the FIBA World Championship begins in Turkey on Saturday.

Twenty-four teams will compete for the crown in four cities across Turkey with Spain, Argentina, Serbia and Greece tagged as the best chances to knock over the Americans.

Having regained the Olympic crown in Beijing two years ago, The Americans are now out to reclaim the world title, something they have not held since 1994.

With a number of the Olympic squad members, such as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Kobe Bryant opting out of the national program after a long NBA season, coach Mike Krzyzewski has opted for youth with five players in his line up aged just 21.

He has done so with an eye to the 2012 Olympics in London, developing young players here to compliment some of his Beijing squad members who he is hoping will return to defend the crown.

"We're not going to get the same guys over and over," said Krzyzewski.

"Like the guys who were on the Olympics team. We think a lot of those guys will come back for London - a number of them but not all of them. So we're trying to develop a culture."

After beginning their pre-tournament buildup sluggishly with a below par performance against a doggish Lithuanian side, the Americans are coming to the fore at the right time, overwhelming an under strength Greece in Athens on Wednesday evening to complete their buildup.

The buildup also included a game against its potential main rival for the title in Turkey, European champion Spain.

Spain goes into the tournament with a near full strength lineup including the most talked-about future star of the game in Ricky Rubio.

However, like most teams Spain is down at least one marquee player with last year's EuroBasket MVP Pau Gasol opting to sit out the tournament.

Against the United States, Spain showed it has the game to match the Americans, pushing them to the edge, only to fall by a point. It was not to be Rubio's night, having his potential three-point winning shot blocked by the US future superstar, Kevin Durant.

Greece and Argentina have perhaps been the least affected by player withdrawal, both arriving in Turkey with formidable squads.

Not too much should be read into Greece's heavy defeat to the United States on Wednesday with key players rested following a strenuous buildup.

Argentina have looked strong in the buildup, arriving in Turkey early to participate in a local tournament in which they edged hosts Turkey in overtime in Monday evening's final.

Spain and the United States are not the only sides missing their marquee players with France and China the two hardest-hit sides.

France goes to Turkey without as many as five frontline players including NBA superstar Tony Parker, Germany will play without Dirk Nowitzki while China will struggle with the absence of national hero Yao Ming.

Serbia and Greece will also start without a few of their stars following an all-in brawl that broke out between the Serbs and Greece in a warm up game in Athens last Thursday.

Center Nenad Krstic was hit with a three-match ban and guard Milos Teodosic is to miss two games, while Greek will lose Antonis Fotsis and Sofoklis Schortsanitis for two games.
