REFERENDUM TO BE HELD IN TURKEY TODAY
The referendum to say YES or NO to changes to be brought to the constitution in Turkey, is going to be held today, 12th September 2010. It will certainly bear great significance, according to many experts.

The referendum to say YES or NO to changes to be brought to the constitution in Turkey, is going to be held today, 12th September 2010. It will certainly bear great significance, according to many experts. Contemporary secular circles in the country have a strong fear that the ruling AKP party targets to transform Turkey into a theocratic state and a yes result in this referendum could be a major step in this direction.
A significant point is “the present constitutional reform referendum is not as important as it is being promoted” the experts comment, as it is truly anti-democratic to include so many articles together in a single package.
The secularist part maintains that the government (AKP) is trying to get control of the Justice departments in Turkey and especially the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors as well as the Constitutional Court which are major barriers according to the current government in power.
There have been many cases where laws or applications passed by AKP were rejected and cancelled by Constitutional Court. On the other hand Supreme Board had to intervene several times to correct unfair applications – as they considered – exercised by judicial authorities claimed to be influenced by the current government.
The theme is if the changes to the constitution prepared by the current government are voted yes the ruling party will get its own supporters into those two vitally important bodies to overcome any future resistance against its policies and strategies.
On the other hand the ruling party is using the argument that these changes are meant to wipe out the negative impacts and influences of 1980 coupe and bring more democracy to the country.
Turks have held their breathe and are waiting for the outcome.
