Cumhuriyet daily columnist Deniz Som, who has been under intensive care due to lung cancer, died today in Istanbul.

Cumhuriyet daily columnist Deniz Som, who has been under intensive care due to lung cancer, died today in Istanbul.
Deniz Som died this morning at 6.50am at the intensive care unit of Baskent University Hospital in Istanbul.Som's funeral will take place tomorrow at 11.30am. A ceremony will be held in front of the Cumhuriyet daily's main building. His body will be buried at Nakkastepe.
Deniz Som was born on the 9th of February 1953 in Istanbul. He started his journalistic career at the Cumhuriyet daily in 1973. Starting out as a journalist, he worked at many positions whithin the newspaper, including Chief of Editorial Staff. He left the Cumhuriyet daily for a short period of time in which he wrote for the newspapers Soz, Hurriyet, and Gunes. He returned to the Cumhuriyet daily in 1993. From 1994 on Som wrote his column "Vaziyet" (state/situation) in which he evaluated daily events.
