The 25th Winter Universiade Games will kick off in Turkey's eastern Erzurum province on January 27. The games will host nearly 3,000 sportsmen from 57 countries who will compete in a total of 11 branches; Alpine skiing, biathlon, ice hockey, curling, ski jumping, cross country, Nordic combined, snowboard, freestyle skiing, figure skating and short track. Turkey will participate in the games with 152 athletes. Turkey's national sportsmen Kenan Sofuoglu, Neslihan Darnel, Gizem Girismen and Selcuk Cebi will carry the Universiade 2011 Torch at the opening ceremony of the games. Officials said that the facilities built for Universiade 2011 constituted the biggest sports investment Turkey had made for a single sports event up until today. Venues include 5 ice sports centers, 3 ski resorts and a ski jumping facility, a stadium and an Athletes' Village. Erzurum 2011 Winter Universiade Games will end on February 6. Universiade, as the olympic meeting of university students, is one of the most important sport events in the world. It is the main point in FISU's (International University Sports Federation) calendar. The games, which are staged every two years in a different city, are held in two parts as Summer and Winter Games. The summer games first took place in Turin in 1959, and winter games in 1960, in the city of Chamonix, France. The leader in hosting the games is Italy (5 times). Erzurum 2011 Winter Universiade Games has broken a record in the history of FISU thanks to the number of countries to participate in the event. 57 countries are expected to compete in the games. Earlier, the highest participation was with 50 countries at the 2005 Winter Universiade games held in Innsbruck, Austria. Tickets for 2011 Winter Universiade are available online on "www.erzurum2011.gov.tr/english". cumhuriyet
