POPULATION OF TURKEY IS 73,722,988 AS OF END OF 2010
Population of Turkey is 73,722,988 as of end of 2010, according to figures of Turkish Statistical Institute, TUIK. TUIK on Friday announced results of "Address Based Population Registration System Census". In 2010, the population living in Turkey increased 1,161,676 persons according to the previous year. 50.2% of the total population is males (37,043,182 persons) and 49.8% is females (36,679,806 persons). In 2010, while population size of 53 provinces out of 81 was increased, population size of 28 provinces was decreased. The lowest three growth rates of population are belong to Tunceli, Cankiri and Ardahan. The highest three growth rates of population are belong to Bilecik, Isparta and Erzincan. Proportion of population living in province and district centers is 76.3%. While 76.3% of the total population (56,222,356 persons) lives in the province and district centers, 23.7% lives in towns and villages (17,500,632 persons). The proportion of population living in the province and district centers is the highest with 99% in Istanbul and it is the lowest with 32% in Ardahan. Proportion of the population living in Istanbul is 18%. The proportion of population living in Istanbul is 18% (13,255,685 persons). This province is followed by Ankara with 6.5% (4,771,716 persons), Izmir with 5.4% (3,948,848 persons), Bursa with 3.5% (2,605,495 persons) and Adana with 2.8% (2,085,225 persons), respectively. Population size of Bayburt as the least populated province in Turkey is 74,412. Half of population is below age 29.2 in Turkey. The median age of the population in Turkey is 29.2. While the median age is 28.7 for males, it is 29.8 for females. The median age for population living in province and district centers is 29.1; that of the village population is 29.8. Proportion of the population between 15 and 64 years of age is 67.2%. Persons at the age group of 15-64 which are the working ages constitute 67.2% of the total population. 25.6% of the population of Turkey is in the age group of 0-14, and 7.2% is in the age group of 65 and over. The population density which is the number of persons per square kilometer is 96 persons in Turkey. It differs between 10 and 2,551 persons by provinces. Istanbul has the highest population density with 2,551 persons. This province is followed by Kocaeli with 432 persons, Izmir with 329 persons, Hatay with 254 persons and Bursa with 250 persons. On the other hand, Tunceli has the smallest population density with 10 persons. While the population density of Konya which has the largest surface area is 52 persons, that of Yalova which has the smallest surface area is 241 persons. CUMHURİYET
