Turkish companies have taken giant steps in terms of exports abroad, in the recent years. Some sectors such as automotive have taken the lead in this successful performance. Another champion sector is textiles and ready-ware garments. On the other hand leather goods have long attracted great interest from Europe mainly and the US. Many Turkish leather companies have a good reputation as suppliers of such articles abroad. Kuzu is among the leading group in this sector. Down below you will find a short interview with executive of said company. The company which has carved out a strong position in the European retail market in recent years, is aiming for a solidified presence in the domestic market. Company chairman Yücel Yılmaz tells the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review that they will open up to 50 stores in Turkey in 2011 while also looking to double turnover; "We are prioritizing the domestic market without compromising our export priorities," says KuZu Leather Chairman Yücel Yılmaz. 'We are prioritizing the domestic market without compromising our export priorities,' says KuZu Leather Chairman Yücel Yılmaz. One of Turkey’s prominent wholesale leather products exporters, KuZu Leather, aims to solidify its presence in the domestic market by expanding to 50 stores in the following five years, according to its chairman. “As KuZu leather we have been exporting to all corners of the world since 1968. Our greatest purchasers are Russia, Ukraine and northern European countries, due to climatic conditions. We are very strong in France as well. But we have returned to the domestic retail market with our first store in Istanbul last year and we are determined to enlarge our retail chain,” Chairman Yücel Yılmaz said earlier this week in responding to questions from the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review. Yılmaz said KuZu Leather was producing only tailor-made products for their customers. “Within a short period of time, we have shifted to mass production for some boutiques in order to increase our manufacturing volume,” he said. The company provided contract manufactured goods for global fashion giants like Versace and Ted Baker but has recently begun producing and selling prêt-à-porter products under its own brand name. The company opened another store in Nuru Osmaniye neighborhood in the historical Istanbul. “We are prioritizing the domestic market without compromising our export priorities,” he said. “Our greatest pride, however, is our boutique in St. Honore in Paris.” KuZu Leather’s network includes tourist areas like the Mediterranean province of Antalya and Fethiye Ölüdeniz by the Mediterranean coast, the chairman said. “Our products are available in these regions where there is a high tourist flow although we currently have no stores under our brand’s name,” Yılmaz said, adding that they were targeting summer sales in these regions. “We are present at 400 sales locations abroad. Since a great majority of our sales consists of exports, we are attending many foreign fairs so as to meet with buyers. We were in Paris last month, for instance,” Yılmaz said. KuZu leather is present Russia, Ukraine, France, Switzerland, Norway, Monaco, Denmark and the United States. “We will open stores in Kuşadası [in the Aegean province of İzmir] and in [the Mediterranean province of] Hatay soon. We are aiming for aggressive growth in the Turkish market,” he said. 30 percent export raise Yılmaz said 2010 was one of the best years in the company’s history due to a 30 percent rise in exports. “Our 2010 turnover was around $10 million,” he said, adding that the company’s 175-gram leather jackets, an innovative first in the global market, were a sensational success. According to data provided to the Daily News by Yılmaz, the company conducts all its production at its Zeytinburnu base in Istanbul, a region densely populated with leather businesses. The company’s annual production capacity is 250,000 units and it employs around a 100-people crew just for the production stage. “We attach paramount importance to research and development [R&D], because, as a 50-year-old company, R&D is an indispensable tool for us to rejuvenate ourselves and attain an enduring presence in the market,” he said. The firm invests a significant amount in R&D, Yılmaz said, but abstained from providing exact figures. “Our 2010 target is to double our turnover,” Yılmaz said. “I consider our business as a form of art and our fundamental priority is to sustain our business, our art, regardless of the global economic conditions.” He also said that in 2011 the store opening project would be the firm’s first agenda and that they aimed to register the same amount of growth in the domestic market as they had registered in foreign markets. “As we spread our sales network, we surely will increase our employment as well,” he said.
