Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stood behind freedom of the press Friday after the owner of an online news portal was arrested on charges of participating in a coup plot and inciting the public to hatred. Erdoğan accused opposition parties of carrying out campaigns against his party to create an empire of fear, as Soner Yalçın, a prominent journalist and the owner of the dissident news portal Oda TV, was arrested along with two editors in Istanbul early Friday.

“Subjects that were not written about out of fear eight years ago are being written about freely today,” said Erdoğan at his party’s provincial chairmen meeting.

“Heads of newspapers told us themselves that they were ordered to print headlines eight, 10, 15 years ago. Have we ever done that? They used to write columns by demand. There is a Turkey today where the media continues with freedom and independence. So what is your problem with us?” asked the Justice and Development Party, or AKP, leader Erdoğan.

“I want to underline that we have never pressured, restricted, interfered in or silenced any media outlet. We cannot do that, as our laws do not allow it.”

The owner and editors of Oda TV were taken to Istanbul’s Beşiktaş Courthouse on Thursday to give testimonies as part of their alleged involvement in the Ergenekon gang, whose alleged members – including lawyers, writers and politicians – are accused of conspiring against the government.

Editors Barış Pehlivan and Barış Terkoğlu were arrested on charges of "being a member of the Ergenekon organization" and "inciting hatred and animosity among the public."

Yalçın was later questioned by public prosecutor Zekeriya Öz and was arrested on charges of "obtaining and publishing documents related to state security," "being a member of the Ergenekon organization" and "inciting hatred and animosity among the public."

“Those on trial from Oda TV are not being tracked for what they wrote or their thoughts. It is because of another action, and it is the judiciary that did it,” Erdoğan said.

Feza Yalçın, lawyer for Soner Yalçın, spoke to CNNTurk on Friday midday and said they would object to the arrest order. The lawyer said they would also object to some of the evidence and added that her client was asked about the CHP, its TV channel, HalkTV, and other subjects, but not Ergenekon.

The prime minister also accused the opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, the Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, and the Peace and Democracy Party, or BDP, of carrying out campaigns to create an empire of fear.

“They are trying to scare the people by making it seem like rights, freedoms and democracy are under danger in Turkey, for they are afraid that their rugs are going to be pulled out from under them,” said Erdoğan.

“This campaign is dated,” said the AKP chief, adding that the CHP is doing the same campaign as in 1960 to create “a foundation for a military coup” by “going street by street and calling the people to resist, provoking Parliament and gaining the support of the media.”
