CUMHURIYET "WE AGREE" Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Frank Ricciardone who earlier said that he could not understand freedom of press in Turkey. Ricciardone said that there could not be democracy in a country where there was no freedom of press. Ricciardone said, "we agree on it hundred percent." TURKEY-EP DISAGREEMENT ON REPORT Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier said that those who prepared the report of the European Parliament (EP) on Turkey lacked balance. After Erdogan's remarks, Helene Flautre, co-president of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, said that Erdogan was the only person who was unaware of the problem regarding freedom of press in Turkey. HURRIYET TURKISH AMBASSADOR: "EVETYTHING WAS SHAKING" A superquake bashed northeastern Japan with huge waves on Friday. 10-meter tsunami waves devastated the northeast coast of Japan. Turkish Ambassador to Turkey Sermet Atacanli said, "everything was shaking, buildings, viaducts were shaking." Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that Turkish citizens in Japan were safe. CURRENT DEFICIT ON RISE Turkey's current account deficit reached $5.86 billion with an increase of 91.4 percent in January 2011, the Turkish Central Bank said. In the same period last year, Turkey's current account deficit was $3.06 billion. The foreign trade balance indicated $5.88 million deficit in January, reflecting a 109.6 percent increase in comparison with the same month of 2010. MILLIYET DOOMSDAY Eastern coast of Japan was rocked by a tremor which was one of the strongest in history. All the world watched how tsunami waves swept everything. "IT WOULD HAVE WIPED OFF 60 PCT OF ISTANBUL" Turkish experts commented on the disaster in Japan. Here's what they say: "The energy created by the earthquake is 16,000 times bigger than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. An earthquake with such a big magnitude is not very likely in Turkey. However, 60 percent of the buildings would have collapsed if Istanbul had such an earthquake." MEETING WITH ROOKIE AMBASSADOR Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Frank Ricciardone. At the meeting, Ricciardone wrote down Erdogan remarks as "we cannot talk about democracy where there is no freedom of press." Following the meeting, Ricciardone showed his notes and said, "we agree on this." RADIKAL SECOND HIROSHIMA Japan experienced the doomsday. Tsunami waves caused by an 8.9-magnitude offshore quake killed at least 1,000 people. Whole world is on alert because of a possible nuclear leak. PM INAUGURATES, RUSSIAN FIRM ACQUIRES Russian iron and steel giant Magnitorsk acquired all shares in Turkish-Russian joint venture MMK Atakas, Turkey's largest iron and steel investment inaugurated by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan last Wednesday. Russian company will pay nearly 465 million USD for the acquisition, sources said. VATAN 55 TIMES BIGGER THAN GOLCUK Japan has been hit by the 5th biggest earthquake in world history. Tsunami killed more than 1,000 people. There are also thousands of missing people. CAN SUCH AN EARTHQUAKE OCCUR IN MARMARA? Disaster in Japan flashed this question in minds. Professor Serif Baris, who witnessed what happened in Japan where he was visiting for a research, said that such a tsunami would not happen in Turkey due to geological structure. ONLY ONE WHO JUMPED OUT OF WINDOW IS A TURK Japanese people did not panic during the earthquake. They just sat down and waited for the end of the tremor. The only person, who jumped out of the window, was a Turkish citizen. Selimhan Kilic said, "first earthquake was very strong. I jumped out of the window. Then I got into the house when I everything was all right. However, I jumped out of the window once again when I felt the second tremor." THERE ARE MISTAKES IN EP REPORT President Abdullah Gul commented on the recent European Parliament report on Turkey. "The report says how Turkey made deep-rooted reforms in judiciary and how Turkish economy moved forward. However, in addition to all these, we can see some wrong evaluations made maybe because of the lack of information," he said. SABAH SUPERQUAKE HITS JAPAN Japan was hit by a massive earthquake, the most devastating one in its history. 10-meter tsunami waves triggered by the quake destroyed several cities in the northeastern part of the country. PRIME MINISTER ERDOGAN INVITES YOUTHS TO POLITICS Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that they hoped that more youths would take part in the new parliament that would be formed after the parliamentary election in June 2011.
