CUMHURIYET IS THERE ANYBODY IN THERE? Turkey's Student Selection & Replacement Center (OSYM), which has become the address of scandals, extends the deadline for applications without making any explanations and students can find no addressee to voice their problems. OSYM head Ali Demir earlier stated that "OSYM was a transparent institution", however, no official information can be obtained from the center at the moment. The institution, which has not given any satisfying reply about the recent cheating claims in several exams, has now extended the application deadline for the Undergraduate Placement Examination (LYS) until May 11. More than 20,000 people have so far objected to results of the exam due to OSYM's calculation errors and the center keeps receiving reclaim applications every day. FUELE: WHY ARE THEY IN PRISON? Concerns about freedom of expression and press have been voiced at a conference organized by the European Commission in Brussels. Speaking at the gathering, European Commissioner Stefan Fuele said he was concerned about the detention of journalists in Turkey in several cases where there was no access to proof. Fuele noted that there was no transparent fact showing why these journalists were sent to prison. HURRIYET TURKISH AMULET PROTECTS F1 DRIVER World champion Sebastian Vettel, who crashed into barriers during the practice tours of Formula 1 (F1) Turkish Grand Prix at the Istanbul Park Circuit, survived the accident without no injuries. Vettel said a Turkish amulet he had drawn on his helmet rescued him. TENDER DOWN BY 1/13TH IN THREE DAYS The disputable tender for printing of ballot papers was held again. Koza Matbaacilik won the first tender on May 2 in return for 12 million Turkish liras (TL). The tender was held again on May 5 due to objections that the costs were high. It also won the second tender but this time in return for 899,000 TL. This means that the state's profit was 11,091,000 million TL in three days. MILLIYET ERDOGAN: OUR COUNTRY IS NOT ABANDONED, THEY WILL SEE Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent harsh messages to PKK during his visit to police officer Metin Kus who was wounded at the recent armed attack against a police vehicle following Erdogan's election rally in the northern province of Kastamonu. "We should not leave the country to these terrorists and gangs. Our land is not stranded or abandoned. They will see this fact," Erdogan said. ARINC CONDEMNS TUGLUK'S REMARKS State Minister & Deputy Premier Bulent Arinc gave the harshest reply to independent deputy candidate Aysel Tugluk's recent remarks claiming that "bad things would happen in Turkey". "I strongly condemn such a confrontational statement which calls for violence," Arinc said. RADIKAL "CRAZY" MUHTAR Coca Cola's record-breaker CEO Muhtar Kent announced a historic target: "I will achieve the company to reach its 125-year turnover in 10 years." RED ALARM BEFORE ELECTIONS Things have become tense in eastern Turkey after a clash in Tunceli and Kastamonu attack staged by the terrorist organization PKK. A clash occurred in Hakkari the previous day after the funeral for a Hizbullah member who was killed. Two companies joined the tender, and Koza Yayincilik won the tender in return for 11.9 million Turkish liras (TL). YSK's chairman said, "we won't pay this price", and DMO cancelled the first tender and held another. The same company dropped the amount to 899,000 TL this time. Vatan daily newspaper searched the tender for printing of ballot papers in the 2007 elections, and the result was surprising. The state paid 4.5 million TL for 61 million ballot papers printed in black-and-white. The company that won the tender in 2007 said, "I told the state that I would print the papers at this price, and I got the job." ECONOMIST WARNING TO TURKISH ECONOMY The Economist magazine warned Turkey that "economy had warmed up a lot." The magazine said Turkey's twin problems were inflation and current deficit, and asked the country to take additional measures. A HUGE PLANE TREE BESIDE THREE SAPLINGS Halit Celenk, the lawyer of three youngsters Deniz Gezmis, Yusuf Aslan and Huseyin Inan who were executed in 1972, died and was laid to rest beside the "three saplings" on their death anniversary. SURVEY IS NOT RELIABLE It has been revealed that 14 provinces in Turkey's east and southeast had not been included in the election survey announced by Republican People's Party's (CHP) deputy chairman Gursel Tekin. Tekin has recently stated that surveys showed CHP was one point ahead of Justice and Development (AK) Party in the election process. In the provinces left out of the survey, CHP's votes are around 9.2 percent, below the 10 percent threshold. ZAMAN SAME SCENARIO DURING EVERY ELECTION PROCESS After the latest attack against Prime Minister Erdogan's party convoy in northern Kastamonu province, Turkey has started to discuss the provocations that take place prior to elections. Security forces had also made warnings on the issue right after the electoral timetable was announced. The incidents that took place prior to the elections held on July 22, 2007; the referendum on October 21, 2007; the local elections on March 29, 2009 and the September 12 referendum all shed light on the latest provocations in the country. Acts of violence, which have risen since the veto decision taken by the Supreme Election Board (YSK) concerning independent MP candidates last month, have started to turn into terrorist acts. WE DON'T HAVE MONEY, THAT'S WHY WE ADVERTISE INSTEAD OF MAKING SURVEYS Republican People's Party (CHP) chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu told Zaman daily that his party would break a record and stage rallies in all 81 provinces prior to general elections.
