Nuri Bilge Ceylan's "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" has been awarded with the Grand Jury Prize at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. Ceylan said at the award ceremony, "thank you for selecting my long and difficult movie one more time."

He said that he did not expect to win the prize, adding, "screening it on the last day, I thought it would be too tiring for the jury."

Produced by Zeynep Ozbatur Atakan, the 2.35-hour film tells the story of the police looking for a dead man in the hills of Anatolia. When the body is at last dug up, themes of guilt and adultery come to the surface.

The cast includes Yilmaz Erdogan, Taner Birsel, Muammer Uzuner and Ahmet Mumtaz Taylan.

Turkey-Bosnia&Herzegovina co-production received support from the Eurimages, the Council of Europe fund for the co-production, distribution and exhibition of European cinematographic works.

Born in 1959 in Istanbul, Ceylan graduated from Bogazici University with a BSc degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Later, he went on with his studies on cinema for two years at Mimar Sinan University.

His first short film "Koza (Cocoon)" was screened in the Cannes Film Festival in 1995. He received many awards with his debut feature "Small Town". His third feature "Distant" received many awards including the Grand Jury Prize and the Best Actor Prize at Cannes, and was praised internationally. His film "Climates" won the FIPRESCI Movie Critics' Award at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and received international praise by critics and experts. The film won 5 awards at the 2006 Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, bringing him the "Best Director" title. Ceylan won his second Best Director Prize in Cannes in 2008 with the film "Three Monkeys".
