CUMHURIYET CHP IN DIYARBAKIR AFTER 9 YEARS Chairman of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Kemal Kilicdaroglu was in the south-eastern province of Diyarbakir on Tuesday. This was the first time in nine years that a CHP chairman visited Diyarbakir. Speaking at a rally in Diyarbakir, Kilicdaroglu promised that they would erect a new factory in Diyarbakir and not a prison. Some of the banners carried at the rally read "Long Live Turkish-Kurdish brotherhood". BRIBERY EPIDEMIC In a survey conducted in Turkey, Ernst & Young found out that 77 percent of those surveyed think bribery in Turkey is widespread. 35 percent of those surveyed expressed that they thought giving bribe was a normal step in finding a job. HURRIYET PLANE OF MERKEL TOURS ON TURKEY FOR TWO HOURS Iran did not allow a plane en route to India carrying German Chancellor Angela Merkel to use its airspace. The plane toured on Turkey for two hours. When the plane was getting prepared to land at Ankara, Iran shed green light. Merkel said fortunately they did not have to land at Ankara. Germany gave a diplomatic note to Iran by saying it was a disrespect against Germany. Iranian authorities said that they had to close the airspace due to a technical problem. PROTESTORS THROW STONES ON CONVOY OF ERDOGAN Clashes took place between protestors and policemen before and after election rally of the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party in Hopa town of northeastern province of Artvin. After the rally, protestors threw stones on convoy of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Police officer Servet Erkan was wounded and hospitalized. MILLIYET 30 GENERALS AT HASDAL, 28 AT ARMY HQ Gen. Bilgin Balanli, the first full general arrested within the scope of Balyoz (Sledgehammer) case, has been sent to the Hasdal military prison. Upon his arrival at the prison, Hasdal was greeted by generals who had been earlier arrested in the same case. Balanli was placed in a single cell, however, he was later sent to GATA military hospital due to his health problem. A total of 30 generals are at Hasdal prison at the moment, while 28 generals are serving at the General Staff headquarters. CHAOS IN HOPA There was serious tension during Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's election rally in Hopa town of northeastern Artvin province. A group of protestors, who hang a poster saying "AK Party get out of Hopa" at the scene of the rally early in the morning, refused to leave the venue despite warnings of security forces. As police teams used pepper gas on the group, protestors reacted by throwing paving stones at the teams. Numerous people were wounded in the clashes, as Metin Lokumcu (54), a member of Freedom & Democracy Party (ODP), lost his life due to a heart attack. Meanwhile, several people threw stones at Erdogan's convoy while it was leaving the town. One of Erdogan's bodyguards fell onto the ground and was seriously wounded during the incident. RADIKAL GAS KILLS IN PROTEST Police used gas bombs against a group protesting Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Hopa town of northeastern Artvin province. A retired teacher died of heart attack during the incidents. Reacting to several protestors' throwing stones at his convoy, Erdogan said, "It seems bandits have come down to Hopa". CIVILIANS NOT PRESENT THIS TIME Not a single state official, except soldiers, attended the funeral of the third general of September 12 military coup, unlike the funerals of the first two deceased generals of the time. Civilians had attended the funerals of Gen. Sedat Celasun in 1998 and Nurettin Ersin in 2005. The state only sent flowers to Gen. Nejat Tumer's funeral yesterday. Tumer lost his life on the day he was called for interrogation for September 12. VATAN "WE WILL SOLVE THIS PROBLEM" The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) held an election rally for the first time in southeastern province of Diyarbakir after nine years. Addressing the people in Istasyon Square in Diyarbakir, CHP chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu said, "We did not come to Diyarbakir and did not listen to your problems. We only told you that you should vote for us. But now we are changing it." Regarding the Kurdish problem, he said, "There is such a problem and my task is to solve this problem." TENSION IN HOPA Clashes took place between a group of protestors and police officers before and after an election rally of the Justice and Development (AK) Party in Hopa town of northeastern province of Artvin. Protestors threw stones on convoy of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and a security guard was wounded seriously. Several people including 15 police officers were wounded in clashes and 60 people were detained. SABAH TURKEY & GEORGIA END PASSPORT REQUIREMENT Turkey and Georgia ended passport requirement on Tuesday. According to a new protocol, the citizens of respective countries would be able to visit the other without using a passport. A national ID shown at the entrance would be sufficient to enter the respective country. PRAMERICA BEGINS INVESTING 1 BILLION USD IN TURKEY WITH ANTALYA SHOPPING MALL Pramerica Eria Partners began investing in Turkey with the Antalya TerraCity Shopping Mall. The new shopping mall will go into service on Wednesday. Pramerica's next investment would be the Istanbul Skymark. The company's investments in Turkey would reach 1 billion USD by the end of 2011. TURKIYE PREMIER ERDOGAN ADDRESSES PEOPLE IN TRABZON Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed an election rally in the northeastern province of Trabzon. Erdogan said, "Turkish people have full confidence in us. We don't make promises that we cannot fulfill." Erdogan said that opposition parties made promises that they could not keep. 4 BLN TL FOR METRO LINE The construction of Kizilay-Kecioren metro line was transferred to the Transportation Ministry. Delivering a speech at the ceremony, State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek said that 4 billion Turkish lira would be invested for the metro network in Ankara. YENI SAFAK PASSPORT-FREE VISIT TO GEORGIA Similar to the travelling procedures between Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Turkey and Georgia have also begun passport and visa-free visits. Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who crossed the Turkish-Georgian border by showing his national ID card, was greeted by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the other side of the crossing. HE BROUGHT FLAGS AS HE WAS AFRAID OF THE WEST Republican People's Party (CHP) chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who had not used Turkish flags and greeted Peace & Democracy Party (BDP) supporters during his party's rally in southeastern Hakkari province, changed his attitude again as he received reactions from western provinces. CHP leader, who could not even use the expression "Kurdish issue" in southeastern Diyarbakir province, embraced the Turkish flag this time. The crowds waved three large flags, which were brought upon order to the rally venue, in front of cameras. ZAMAN TAXES GO DOWN, SALES OF MOTORCYCLES BOOM As the weather in Turkey is getting warmer, the number of motorcycles on the roads is rapidly increasing. A reduction in taxes in February has caused a boom in the sales of motorcycles in Turkey. Last year, 128,000 motorcycles were sold in Turkey. In 2011, motorcycle companies plan to sell 250,000 motorcycles in Turkey. TURKS TO ENTER GEORGIA BY SHOWING ID CARDS Turkish and Georgian citizens will be able to enter respective countries by merely showing a national ID. According to a protocol signed by Turkey and Georgia, there will be no need to show a passport for the visits of the citizens to respective countries. Meanwhile, Turkey's Anadolu Jet company began direct flights between the Turkish capital province of Ankara and Georgian city of Batumi on Tuesday. TURKEY PRESS
