Turkish dailies mostly covered in their Friday's issue the rise in Special Consumption Tax (OTV) rates, terrorist attack on a police station in southern province of Hatay, and the meetings of Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.
Turkish dailies mostly covered in their Friday's issue the rise in Special Consumption Tax (OTV) rates, terrorist attack on a police station in southern province of Hatay, and the meetings of Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. All the newspapers wrote the rise in OTV rates. The government increased the OTV rates on alcoholic beverages, tobacco and products, luxury automobiles and cell phones. At least 20 percent price increase is expected in alcoholic beverages and tobacco. The government will collect 5.5 billion Turkish lira (TL) income through the rise in OTV, and use it to stop current account deficit. The tax rise was made under the mid-term economic program which was announced yesterday. According to the program, Turkish economy will grow 4-5 percent for the next three years, and 1.5 million people will have jobs. Inflation will remain on five percent between 2012 and 2014, while current account deficit will drop to seven percent. Turkiye, Yeni Safak, Cumhuriyet, Hurriyet and Sabah dailies wrote about the terrorist attack on a police station in Hatay. PKK terrorists attacked on a police station in Denizciler hamlet of Iskenderun town in Hatay, and police officer Kadir Alcioglu was killed, while two police officers and a civilian were injured. One terrorist, who was carrying a bomb, was killed. Another topic the newspapers mostly wrote was Zebari's visit to Turkey. Prime Minister Erdogan gave a strong message about PKK terrorist organization via his meeting with Zebari. Erdogan said that Iraq had to eliminate PKK, otherwise, Turkey would do it and Iraq would not have the right to regret. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Davutoglu expressed Turkey's determination in fight against terrorism, and said that Turkey would continue to take the most effective measures. He said that Iraq, too, should give determined messages in fight against PKK. Zebari said that Iraq would not let its relations with Turkey to be poisoned. Zebari met Davutoglu in Ankara, while his meeting with Erdogan took place in Istanbul. Cumhuriyet
