The cultural structures of Istanbul are the elements that make Istanbul a legendary city... One of the most fantastic places in the city is the Maiden's Tower right in the heart of the sea.. It is a blend of dream and reality, lonely and mysterious .. The Maiden’s Tower has an important place in the history of Istanbul,  the capital of three great empires.

The Maiden’s Tower is the loneliest and one of the most attractive locations of Istanbul which always expressed a bitter love story. The Tower and Istanbul are so much intermingled into each other that Istanbul can’t be without the Maiden’s Tower and the Tower without Istanbul.

The Maiden's Tower was first built in 408 BC to control the movements of the Persian ships in the Bosporus strait. Back then the Tower was located between the ancient cities of Byzantine and Chrysopolis. The tower was later enlarged and rebuilt as a fortress by the Byzantine emperor Alexius Comnenus in 1110 AD, and was restored and slightly modified several times by the Ottoman Turks.

Those who love to watch the Maiden’s Tower knows very well the importance of the Tower for Istanbul. The Tower is not only important for being a cultural structure but also it bears importance for its legends. The Maiden’s Tower became the symbol of loneliness, love and unapproachable.
Many poems were written about the Maiden’s Tower and hundreds of photos of the Tower have been taken.

During the ancient times, the Tower was known as “Arkla and Damialis” and during the medieval Byzantine period it was known as the “Leander’s Tower”. This unique structure today is known as the” Maiden’s Tower”.

After Istanbul’s conquest by the Ottomans a lighthouse was added to the Tower and the Tower was used as a lighthouse for centuries. Meanwhile a fire that broke out in the lighthouse part in 1719 gave great damage to the Tower.

The Ottoman Grand Vizier of the era, Damat Ibrahim Pasha from Nevşehir repaired the Tower and added a chalet made of glass and a dome to the Maiden’s Tower.
The Tower was even used as an isolation hospital due to epidemic cholera before the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

In 1959 a radar station was set up in the Tower for military purposes. In 1982 the management of the tower was handed over to the Turkish Maritime Lines. As of 2000, the Tower has been managed by the private sector and went through a renovation. Today the interior of the tower has been transformed into a popular café and restaurant, with an excellent view of the former Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman capital.

The foundations of the lower part of the Maiden’s Tower was laid during the reign of Mehmet II The Conqueror. The landing platform surrounding the Tower is covered by wide stones. Sultan Mahmut II’s signature, dated back to 1832 is still present in the marble plate. A historical cistern is present at the wider part of the Tower.

There are many legends about the construction of the Maiden’s Tower.

According to one of the legends the Tower was built by Greek King Hares to protect his daughter. The legend says a princess was locked up in the tower by her father because of a prophecy. During the time when Istanbul was under the rule of Athens an oracle alerted King Hares, who was recently widowed, and said to him that his daughter would die by a bite of a snake. The king in an effort to prevent his daughter's early demise placed her away from land to keep her away from any snakes. So he had the tower built in the middle of the Bosporus to protect his daughter. Unfortunately at the end of the story, despite all the efforts and care, the princess died by the bite of a snake that was brought to the islet in a basket of grapes just as the oracle had predicted.

People never knew the realities about the Tower and had to be content with the legends told about it.

The Maiden’s Tower for centuries had a unique view and can be visited at any time of the year. The view of the Tower within the day should not be missed.

It is never enough to mention the historical and cultural locations of Istanbul. For this reason Istanbul is a city of dreams.
