BOSNIA TURNS SOUTH AFRICA INTO A DREAM FOR TURKEY

After a draw against Bosnian team in Bosnia, Turkey can expect the World Cup in South Africa to be nothing more than home entertainment - that is unless a miracle happens :) With only two games left in the group, Turkey needs to win both of its remaining games and hope that Bosnia and Herzegovina drops points.

Turkey failed to create many chances and did not act with composure in front of the goal against a side chasing its first-ever World Cup showing. For Turkey, the World Cup in South Africa will probably be nothing more than home entertainment

Turkey will need miracles to qualify for football’s biggest competition after it failed to beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 2010 World Cup qualifying group game on Wednesday.

An early strike by Turkish midfielder Emre Belözoğlu was canceled by a stunning long-range free kick by Sejad Salihovic in the 32nd minute, giving Bosnia and Herzegovina a crucial advantage through a 1-1 result.

Turkey’s woes deepened with coach Fatih Terim’s dismissal from the touchline, as the manager criticized the referee on the foul that led to Salihovic’s goal.

Turkey remained third in Group 5 of the qualifying round with 12 points, while Bosnia and Herzegovina has 16 points and is in the second spot; that will be enough for the team to advance to a playoff round.

Spain beat Estonia 3-0 on Wednesday and has won the group to claim direct qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

With only two games left in the group, Turkey needs to win both of its remaining games and hope that Bosnia and Herzegovina drops points.

Turkey will visit Belgium on Oct. 3 and will welcome Armenia four days later. Bosnia will take on Estonia in an away game and welcome Spain.

Terim rued refereeing after the game, saying that Manuel Olegario Bartolo had an agenda to make the Turkish side angry.

“Everything was great except the referee,” Terim said after the game. “I said that was not a foul and it should have been taken five meters behind. [There was] neither an insult nor a cussword. Even the linesman was surprised. And the funnier thing was he tried to send me next to the hooligans in the stands,” he said.

“He can boast in Portugal, saying ‘I sent Fatih Terim off the game.’”

Terim said Turkey could have won anyway, if it were not for the missed chances.

“We had some goal chances, especially in the last minutes of the game,” he said. “In the first half they could have taken the lead, but we could have won the game 5-3, as well.”

Terim knew what was at stake for the game, and said, “We would be the one going to playoffs had we won.”

During the press conference after the Estonia game, which ended in a 4-2 victory for Turkey last Saturday, Terim acknowledged that the Bosnia game would be worthy of a final.

“If we cannot beat Bosnia and Herzegovina, we will wish them all the best at the World Cup" he said on Saturday. “If we don’t win, we will bid our farewell as gentlemen.”

When asked if he would resign, Terim responded: “I will decide what I am going to do. You first go to the World Cup, and then you will learn what I will do from international news agencies.”
