After beating host-country Poland 87-69 with a dominating display on Wednesday - winning its third consecutive match in the European Basketball Championship - Turkey finished group D in the first place and advanced to the next round to match with the top three teams of Group C, Slovenia, Spain and Serbia (along with Poland and Lithuania) in the newly formed group F. Turkey enters the next round with a serious advantage. As the first-round points are carried through to these new groups (minus wins over eliminated teams), Turkey starts the qualifying round on top. Coach Bogdan Tanjevic now has two wins, ahead of Slovenia, Spain, Serbia and Poland, who have one win apiece. Lithuania begins Group F play with no wins and two defeats. Turkey will take on Olympic silver medalist and EuroBasket 2007 finalist Spain in its first Group F game on Saturday. Turkey’s manager Harun Erdenay said the team was aware that the competition will be harder now, but added that the players are confident. “Slovenia, Spain and Serbia are important teams, without a doubt,” said Erdenay. “But we are currently in great shape.” Erdenay added: “We aimed for three wins in three games, and that was what we earned with strong play. Now we’re shooting to go three-for-three again.” The former basketball star said expectations are high within the Turkish camp. “We’ll focus first on the quarterfinals, then on the semis while aiming for the final,” he said. Turkish star Hidayet “Hedo” Türkoğlu said so far, so good. “The team’s morale is at the max, and we’re playing good ball,” said Hedo, who signed a five-year contract with the NBA’s Toronto Raptors earlier this summer. “The results will come if we continue like this.” Meanwhile, Greece, France, Croatia, Germany, Russia and Macedonia advanced to play in the Group E qualifying round. The Group E competition kicks off with Russia-Croatia, Germany-Greece and France-Macedonia games on Friday. SOURCE: Hürriyet Daily News
