REPUBLIC DAY TO BE CELEBRATED ON 29TH OCT
Republic Day is celebrated on 29 October and marks the day in 1923 when Turkey's constitution was changed, freeing it from the grasp of the Ottoman Empire, to become a republic. The day is a national holiday throughout the country and ceremonies and events take place to honour the founder of the republic and the country's first prime minister, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

The 86th Anniversary of the Turkish Republic will be celebrated with several ceremonies and activities throughout Turkey on Thursday, October 29th. The schools, government offices and banks are closed beginning from Wednesday noon. Republic Day's first ceremony is going to take place in Anitkabir, Ataturk's Mausoleum, in the Turkish capital of Ankara. State officials led by Turkish President Abdullah Gul are going to place a wreath on mausoleum, observe a minute of silence and sing Turkish National Anthem. The President is going to write to Anitkabir special notebook. Parliament Speaker, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Constitutional Court President Hasim Kilic, Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug, Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Deniz Baykal, members of Council of Ministers, other political party leaders, military and civilian authorities are going to participate in the ceremony. There are going to be glamorous activities with strong visual themes in Istanbul as well, while more official government ceremonies will held in Ankara. In Istanbul, the night sky will be lit up with fireworks, while the Bosporus Bridge and the Maiden Tower will be decorated with colorful lights and laser shows have been prepared. Turkey became a republic on October 29, 1923. This formally declared the dissolution of Ottoman Empire; and Turkish State became a republic under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
