Alanya luxury hotel opts for education tourism

A five-star hotel in the Mediterranean province of Antalya has opened its doors to students preparing for exams along with their teachers in a bid to maintain vacancy levels at its hotel during the slow season and not lay off its staff, daily Sabah reported Monday.  As a result of a promotional campaign, students from private schools and training centers spend roughly a week at the hotel in the city’s coastal district of Alanya as a preparation session for upcoming exams. A classroom, equipped with desks, board and other teaching equipment, was set up in the hotel’s meeting room for the students. Hotel manager Cengiz Aksoyer said they had conceived of the new concept to keep the hotel open during the winter season. “Our hotel employs nearly 200 staff in the winter season. We have engaged in such business activities in order not to loose our qualified employees,” he said.  The manager also said the project aimed to offer a vacation climate to students who will sit exams. “The students find an opportunity to visit historical places in Alanya in addition to their extensive class schedule,” he said. “We are offering appropriate prices for the winter season. Our hotel has hosted nearly 700 students already this season. The program has attracted a lot of attention especially because students are on a two-week school break at the moment,” he said.

Dead or alive unimportant

According to a recent verdict by the Supreme Court of Appeals, capturing animals alive instead of killing them does not matter in the eyes of law, neither does setting them free after being caught, daily Hürriyet reported Monday. Metin A. was caught by the gendarmerie in İzmir after trapping 20 goldfinch birds in April 2006. The gendarmerie confiscated the birds as evidence and set them free the next day. Metin A. was fined 428 Turkish Liras by the İzmir Environment and Forestry Directorate. Following this, the Environment and Forestry Ministry sued Metin A. for compensation of 400 liras for each bird, adding up to 8,000 liras. A local court denied the ministry the compensation, noting that the birds were set free and no harm was done. The ministry then took the case to the Supreme Court of Appeals, which decided in favor of them and revoked the verdict of the local court. The Supreme Court of Appeals stated that the related laws and regulations on hunting do not differentiate between capturing animals dead or alive; therefore, Metin A. should pay compensation. The local court objected to the revocation, so the matter was put onto the agenda of the Law Board of the Supreme Court of Appeals, which also ruled against the local court. Metin A. will be go to court again according to the binding decision of the Supreme Court of Appeals.

Political rivalry allegedly costs jobs

Political rivalry between the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, and the Felicity Party, or SP, is alleged to have cost the jobs of more than 300 people in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, daily Haber Türk reported Monday. The municipality is alleged to have fired roughly 350 people working in İSMEK, which provides free vocational classes (especially for women) to create employment opportunities. Those fired include teachers, managers and other staff who reportedly worked for the SP in the local elections last year. In response to various media stories, the municipality made a statement saying 279 people had been fired. Thirteen course centers were located in the Sarıyer, Maltepe and Kartal district municipalities, which were held by the main opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, and did not want İSMEK courses. To prevent any unjust treatment, part-time working personnel who had income from different sources and who were under necessary performance levels were selected to be fired, the statement said. “It is natural that İSMEK re-plans its work according to changing circumstances,” it added. The municipality rejected any claims of discharges due to political rivalry between the SP and the AKP. The popular İSMEK courses provide education at 123 different branches.

Name resemblance sends grandfather to jail

Osman Zeren, 68, was detained on terrorism charges after he was mistaken for his 28-year-old nephew with the same name, daily Taraf reported Monday. Zeren, from Çengelli village in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, has 15 children and 20 grandchildren. He lost one leg to a mine 36 years ago; he also suffers from diabetes, hypertension and a weak heart. Despite all these, he was taken into custody two weeks ago by the gendarmerie after being mistaken for nephew who has been missing for 23 years. Although their father’s names are different on their identity cards, Zeren could not convince the security forces as to his identity. Zeren fell ill during fingerprinting at the station and was taken to the hospital, from where he was again transferred to prison. After spending two days alongside terrorism suspects in prison, the prosecutor believed Zeren and set him free. Zeren spent a total of two days in detention this time – but a similar mistake caused him to stay in prison for 42 months back in the early 1980s. “You believed me but you also destroyed me. I hired a lawyer I could not afford. I was most offended by being taken everywhere in handcuffs. They left me without honor, health and money,” said Zeren. “They speak about the [Kurdish] initiative and such…All empty words. These things happen to us because we are Kurdish.”
