Istanbul is not only famous for its beauties reflected to the sea that passes through the city, but also for the beauties reflected from the sea.

There are islands lined up as precious stones on a necklace to the southeast of Istanbul.

A group of islands in the center are encircled by other islands in Istanbul such that islands of Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada and Kaşıkadası are encircled by islands of Kınalıada, Sedefadası, Tavşanadası, Yassıada and Sivriada.

For centuries the islands became summer resorts due to the richness of their natural structures. Their coasts, beaches, picnic areas, pinewood forests and valleys covered with flowers became the symbol of their beauty.

Istanbul’s islands had many names but the most commonly used one for the Islands is the Prince Islands.

The known history of the Islands starts with the Byzantine Empire.

They were called the Prince Islands by foreign chroniclers because of Byzantine emperors' practice of sending princes there to be blinded, exiled in the monasteries or executed.

In medieval times they were the sites of monasteries, away from the bustle and temptations of the city. The monasteries in the Islands are said to be constructed in the 8th century after the separation of West and East Roman Empires.

During the Byzantine period, the pirates threatened the fishermen living in the Islands.

In 1412 Byzantine Emperor Manuel Paleologos and Musa Çelebi had a naval battle near Yassıada and after that the Turks also started coming to the Island.

After the conquest of Istanbul in 1453 by Ottoman Sultan Fatih the Conqueror, Ottomans took control of the islands.

After Turks seized the Islands, the practice of exiling or even executing princes came to an end. Monasteries were emptied and majority of the people immigrated to the city. The development of the Islands started after the Reforms of 1839.

After the establishment of the legal regulations that gave property rights to the foreigners in the Islands, the French chose the Islands as summer resorts. Later on Turks also started settling in the Islands.

In 1846 ferry routes from Istanbul to the Islands began which played a vital importance in the development of the Islands.

The Islands served as summer residences for Istanbul’s rich bourgeois families, minorities and foreigners. The population in the Islands increased significantly. Kınalı Island was mostly inhabited by Armenians, Burgaz by Greeks and Büyükada by the Jews. Meanwhile, Turks were in majority in Heybeliada. Municipality of the Islands (Adalar) became one of the first three municipalities of Istanbul.

At the end of the 19th century the number of schools also increased in the Islands. The Greek School of Commerce, Naval School and Seminary were opened in Heybeliada.

Büyükada is the central town of the Prince Islands and the only means of transportation in the Islands is the horse-drawn carriages.

All the Islands in Istanbul have a unique value. “The Islands City Museum” will be opened in Büyükada within the scope of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Projects. The Büyükada Island House hosted many cultural events, exhibitions, concerts and shows as steps towards the establishment of the museum.

Restoration works are underway to convert an old primary school into the museum. This building, which is very important for the Islanders, belonged to the Patriarch of Alexandria Sofronios. Later on Adalar (The Islands) Municipality bought the building and used it as a school between the years 1922 to 1967. This project was launched by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and by the Adalar Municipality, District governorship and Islands Foundation. Besides professionals, this project is also being supported by voluntary agencies and volunteers.

The main purpose to establish the Islands City Museum is to substantiate the past and present structure of the Islands and to carry people, buildings, nature, culture, exiling and migrations to the future by using modern museum techniques.

This month an exhibition titled “Towards the Islands Museum” was held in order to introduce the museum materials and the museum site to the people.

Also short interviews were made with the attendees during the exhibition which was open until September 12th.

The Islanders also contributed to the exhibition by providing documents and materials related to the Islands. They already started to gather every single document, sound, material, picture, map, letter and even their grandparents’ clothes for the exhibition.

“The Islands Museum” to be opened next year will be Istanbul’s first-ever city museum.
