Many events have been organized to involve the young people of Istanbul in daily life and cultural life.

Istanbul also includes colorful activities for children and youth in its events organized within the context of preparations for 2010 when the city will be the European Capital of Culture.

Many projects have been launched for children and youth to have the opportunity to participate in the events. How could they be forgotten as they are regarded as architects of the bridges of future? They are the owners of cultural and historical heritage.

They are very lucky to live in such a city that possesses cultural and historical richness.

2010 will be very colorful and full of different activities for children and youth and for sure will add a lot to their memories.

Regarding the project, Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency said the following: A researcher once said “For a child, museums are the lunchbox of the city he lives in”. We go even further to say “Information resources for our children are education and art venues”. We pursue education projects in the areas of arts, environment, history and museumology for our children to make use of this wealth more generously. To this end, we aim to diversify the 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency’s channels to connect with the community to leave permanent marks for the city residents and to introduce the activities of our agency to 2.5 million students as well as other members of the society.

The Agency said further that it aims to expand cultural and art activities, attaining the participation of students and teachers into the 2010 process as producers and subsequently to increase the number of people in Istanbul who are involved in cultural activities.

The Agency further aims to reach out for over 2 million students of over 2,500 schools spread in 39 counties of Istanbul and intends to expand culture and arts to all walks of life in the city as Istanbul is the European Capital of Culture in the year 2010.

Upon the results of projects to be conducted under this Program, various seminars will be held for the teachers of visual arts, music, theatre, Turkish, literature and history and direct contacts will be established with primary school and high-school students.

Likewise hundreds of thousands of students will be engaged in various activities for culture and arts production and many cooperation opportunities will be realized among dozens of institutions.

All these projects have been launched since Istanbul was selected the European Capital of Culture.

Last year elementary-grade students produced projects for Istanbul in 2010; they created their own website and published it on the internet. Various competitions were organized for this project.

Sites on natural beauties and cultural richness of many schools, Beylerbeyi Palace, Büyükada, Heybeliada, Istanbul Archeology Museum, Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar were prepared. Tours were organized to these cultural assets, video and photo shootings were done and interviews were made with the shopkeepers and historians.

The students of Şişli Terakki Elementary School came first with various examples and information they gave about fountains in their web sites.

The students from sixth and seventh grades also set the budget necessary for the restoration works of the fountain. They also got permission for the restoration project and are now waiting excitedly for some institutions to contribute to the project.

A platform is planned for high school students from various economic and social backgrounds to join together to create projects within Istanbul 2010.

This Project will make solid bridges between university students and high school students as university students will train and guide high school students for making projects and eventually there will be competitions among project groups.

The Project “High Schoolers Joining in 2010” is repeated each year since September 2006.

Although initially planned to end by June 2009, the long term aim of this Project is to support and encourage the participants to realize their projects within Istanbul 2010.

The other aim of the Project is to raise the capacities of youngsters to make projects even for other culture and art organizations beyond Istanbul 2010.

A joint working culture is to be attained between high school and university students. This Project will also help raise the sense of tolerance and cooperation among high school students coming from different schools, districts and cultural backgrounds.

There are many festivals organized in places where there are children and youth. Actually in many places around the world youngsters organize their own festivals if they are given the opportunity.

There are many festivals and events within the scope of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture events. For instance, Istanbul Bilgi University Youth Studies Unit organized the “Gepgenç Youth Festival” and hosted over 200 youth organizations from different cities of Turkey for 5 days in Istanbul in 2006 and 2008.

An organizing committee formed by the youth organizations created the content and provided resources for the festival. Within this context more than 500 workshops, art performances and concerts were held in both festivals.

The 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency which supported the festival in 2009 will continue its support in 2010 as well.

“Gepgenç Festival” will go on in 2010 as a part of “Istanbul Enjoys Streets”.

The preparatory works of many other festival projects will continue within the context of Gepgenç Festival Project.
