EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 22
There are scores of book arts in the Turkish culture such as lettering, gilding, marbling, miniatures and book binding and coating. The upcoming year thoroughly enriches the activities organized in Istanbul. One of them, which have an important place among our traditional arts is the “Traditional Book Arts - Masters of Today” series which was opened on 13 November within the context of projects launched by Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency. The purpose of the exhibition was to increase the quality and continuity of the Turkish Book Arts. Having attracted great interest also last year, the “Traditional Turkish Book Arts - Masters of Today” exhibition by Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Visual Arts Directorate, took a stand at the 28th TÜYAP Istanbul Book Fair for the second time. “Traditional Turkish Book Arts - Masters of Today 2009” features 67 works which were made within 2009 by prominent 56 masters of Turkey. The exhibition series aim at exhibiting contemporary craftsmen’s art work of Turkish book arts such as lettering, gilding, marbling, miniatures, binding and coating in order to expose the current level of these arts and making solid contributions to their permanence. The “art of binding” is a type of art practiced all over the world. It is a very old tradition of handicraft, and now became a branch of industry with increasing book printing and developed techniques. In Turkey the art of book binding which formerly started for the preservation of books with Islam converted into a branch of art which signified the respect and importance shown to the religious books. The researchers confirmed that Turks living in the Central Asia used leather ornaments and pressed metal shapes on them. This type of bookbinding is seen in the later periods in the Western world. The Ottomans after the second half of the 15th century and in the 17th century gave the most original examples of bookbinding. Edirne and Istanbul were the most important centres of bookbinding art. A classic bookbinding includes the most important examples of decorative arts. Today it is possible to come across the immortal evidences of great artists in various libraries and museums. The art of “book coating” means “cutting” in Arabic. The text on a paper or leather is removed by cutting the motifs. The sculpted piece is pasted onto a paper, leather or a glass. The oldest examples of book coating are seen on leather in the 14 century. Meanwhile works on paper were made in the 15th century. Art of coating is originated from Iran, but from the beginning of the 16th century the Ottomans used the art widely. Book coating that attracted great interest in Europe was spread throughout the world by the Western travellers who visited the East due to Orientalism. The art of lettering is a type of art commonly used for decorative purposes developed by writing systems and script elements. Art of lettering is to form significant signs with meaningful, harmonious and skilful manners. The importance of “lettering” that emerged from different writing systems of different geographies was especially important before print works. This art had an important place in the traditional arts of books and today there are very good examples of it in the libraries and museums of Istanbul. “Marbling” is the art of painting on the water. The images are passed onto the papers. Marbling was a very famous art during the Ottoman period. Meanwhile during the beginning of the 20th century this art lost its importance. Today young craftsmen give life to the art of marbling again. Miniature is a type of painting known since the ancient times. It is generally used in illustrating books so the size is kept small. “Gilding” is an Arabic word which has been derived from “zahab” meaning “gold”. Gilding currently means to draw beautiful patterns of plants or geometrical shapes on the margins of books. At the beginning, golden colour was used in this art and this is why they called it gilding. Literally speaking, gilding means to cover something with gold, but in practice, it is application of beautiful patterns to religious, scientific, cultural, and historical books as well as poem collections. Masters of gilding used flowers and their stalks to illuminate around book pages. Today in Turkey many talented artists are trained in universities. All the elements of our culture carrying all values of history from past to present is very important for Istanbul because these are the values by which Istanbul gains the title “2010 European Capital of Culture”.
